About Shorewood, WI

Location, Real Estate, Schools, Shopping & Restaurants

The Village of Shorewood is located in Milwaukee County and is the first suburb north of the City of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. At just over 1.5 square miles, it is situated on a bluff overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan and is bordered by the City of Milwaukee on the south, the Village of Whitefish Bay on the north, and the Milwaukee River on the west.

Incorporated in 1900 as the Village of East Milwaukee, Shorewood is the fourth oldest suburb in the Milwaukee area. The name of the Village was changed to Shorewood in 1917.

Around 14,000 people reside in this community. Many quaint shops, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, a major county park, an outstanding school system, a spectacular beach, a beautiful riverfront park and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks make Shorewood a popular destination in metropolitan Milwaukee and feels like a small town in the middle of a major city - host to ice cream socials, a theater troup and a Fourth of July bicycle parade.

The lots in Shorewood tend to be a smaller and urban sized - less than 1/4 acre. Homes tend to be closer together, forming a closely-knit community dynamic.  Most were built between the 1890's - 1950's. There are very, very few new construction homes, but there are a few newer condominiums, condo conversions and townhome developments. Many residents choose to remodel, renovate and add additions or purchase homes already updated by previous owners.

Architectural styles are largely Bungalows, Colonials, Tudors and Cape Cods, ranging from modest 1,200 sq ft homes to homes over 5,000 sq ft nearer the lake. There are also many historic apartment buildings from the 1920's and 1930's and roomy two-story duplexes. Sale prices in 2006 ran from $118,00to $1.7 million, with a median price of $396,877. Vacant lots are non-existant in the village, though a few homes have been torn down on the lake, to make way for new construction.

Shorewood High School is an excellent, well-established school, which has the reputation of being among the finest in the Midwest.

Students consistently score high on national tests and over 85% go on to higher education.   College entrance examination scores are among the highest in the state.  More than a third of the senior class writes Advanced Placement examinations, with 80% scoring a 3 or above for college credit.

Other schools in Shorewood include Atwater Elementary, Lake Bluff Elementary and the Shorewood Intermediate School.

Optional Northshore private schools would include
University School, Holy Family Catholic, Milwaukee Jewish Day School,  Dominican High School, St. Roberts Catholic, Marquette University High School and St. John's Lutheran, among others.

Shorewood is intersected by two major streets, Capitol Drive and Oakland Avenue, which offer a variety of shops, both locally and nationally owned. A walk down the landscaped streets, with charming streetlights and signs, is like walking down a small town main street and offers a shopper a bookstore, grocery stores, a drug store, day spas, coffee shops, bagel stores, a New York-style deli,  resale shops, jewelry, dry cleaning, movie rentals, ice cream, restaurants, cafes and taverns. Also nearby is the new Bayshore Town Center mall in Glendale (with plenty of national shopping and dining choices)  and additional shopping centers in Fox Point, Bayside, Glendale, Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee and Mequon.

Popular restaurants include The City Market, Harry's Bar & Grill, William Ho's, Benji's Deli & Restaurant, China Palace, East Garden, The Brit Inn, Culver's Custard, Hubbard Lodge and the North Star American Bistro.
